Once again, February 14th approaches. Valentine's Day sneaks onto the scene. It creeps up on us and discover's the average person to be without any genuinely original celebration ideas. But fear not, friends! We aren't alone. There is a creative soul who has done the work for us!

OnceAgainSam, aka Sarah Mandell, is here to save the day with the most incredibly unique way to give your heart away! Sarah has created these lovely, anatomic hearts from vibrantly dyed felt. They are true to scale and absolutely captivating! Using a technique known as needle felting, she molds these small sculptures from dyed wool by matting it down until it becomes a solid yet soft representation of love. Really now, who said that Valentine's Day had to be cliche and predictable?

These detailed crimson creations are only $22 and are the most unique Valentine's I've seen. And, for those of you who want to go above and beyond for that special someone, there is one giant heart living in the gallery at the moment. Sometimes it is perfectly wonderful to give your heart away.

Happy Saturday all! Over the past few days while scurrying around the gallery getting back in to the swing of artful things, I've had the pleasure of chatting with friends about how they are starting the new year. One good friend, in particular, said, "this will be my year of art." What she meant was that she was going to commit the time to studying and practicing her own art.

If you have been undecided about how you're starting your new year and studying art has crossed your mind, check out what some of my good friends are doing over at the Greenville County Museum of Art - what a fabulous place to start your creative journey!

Paul Flint's "Wet on Wet" oil painting technique class begins this coming Thursday, January 10th. I hear from a very reliable source that Paul's class has a couple of open seats - don't walk, but run to sign up.

Hi friends and collectors! Happy 2012! Last year was an excellent year. Here in the gallery we've held 11 art shows, 3 house parties, created our first video, and hosted a book release. And this is the key to our success--we couldn't have done any of this without YOU! Thank you for a wonderful year and here's to a fresh start with the new year.

In just a few short days we will celebrate the very first First Friday of the year with the opening of something we call "Curtain Call." Imagine finding your favorite paintings in the form of a fabric curtain--hang it as a wall tapestry, a window curtain, shower curtain...the sky's the limit. Eight talented artists (Paul Flint, Kyle Buttram, Diane Kilgore Condon, Teri Pena, Hannah Sloan, Signe Grushovenko, Annie Koelle and Angie Schmerbeck) have painted these original fabric curtains. This will be a first for all of us!

Thanks to my talented and energetic friend and fellow artist, Melinda Hoffman, we are bringing you The Mini Book Collective. What is it? It's a project designed to create small books reflecting a sense of place that share one's experiences of Greenville County. Melinda was totally intrigued and inspired by an international project from the UK, Somethink Collective/The Collective Atlas.

For those of you who have noticed the gap in quality gift options for the holidays, I think you will be excited to hear about the newest creation by Greenville’s artist, Bruce Plourde. It’s an idea Greenville’s never heard of before!

It all began with the question, “So what’s next?” One year ago, Bruce Plourde was meeting Pam Hale to exchange the many ornaments he had made for her event planning business. They talked about the need for quality gifts in the retail and corporate market. Bruce mentioned a comment Mayor Knox White had made to him about creating some sort of coffee table book about Greenville using Bruce’s imagery. But the idea grew. This would not be limited to just a book. It would be a whole movement.

Bruce pulled together a team of writers and local artists to start the nine month journey together. The book grew as they collected modern images as well as old. They worked to find and craft the stories behind each shot and it grew to become more than a history book. The project is a modern snapshot of a city complete with QR codes for smart phones and tablets that can access videos and images that go beyond what a physical book can offer. And it is built on the concept of Sustainable Story telling.

The book is called “Greenville—Imprints of a City” and will arrive in the A&L gallery this Friday, December 2. So come out on Friday for a chance to get your hands on one of the first 100 copies. It’s the perfect gift from one lover of Greenville to another! Giving the gift will help to support local artist and writers while receiving the book would be the perfect surprise for anyone who loves Greenville and wants to learn more.

So drop by this Friday for book release event between 6 and 9pm! You won’t want to miss it!

Happy, happy Sunday friends and collectors! I have been away from the blogging board for a whole week now...the Aiken Street renovation project is now complete and I am back!

Many of you saw the before pictures and "rough around the edges" really doesn't do justice to the condition of this 120 year old mill house...however, letting the light in, as well as hiring in a fabulous crew and of course begging in my precious parents, my little brother, my hubby and a few friends - you know who you are (THANK YOU!) -
helped to smooth it all out. While taking advantage of the imperfections, perfection was not required. Instead, this home celebrates the irregular, unique beauty that was always there and I am so proud to show you the results.

Teresa Prater is Back!

And not one second too soon friends and collectors. Teresa opened one year ago at A & L with her exquisite encaustic paintings and we are so thrilled that she is once again back in the gallery! Teresa is the Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Converse College and is also the Charles A. Dana Professor of Studio Art.

Working in a variety of media , including digital photography, artist books and encaustic painting, Teresa primarily uses the figure and supporting symbolic images to create narrative environments. Her artwork has been shown in twenty-three one-person exhibitions and over 100 exhibitions nationally and in Mexico and Switzerland. Several of her drawings have won top awards in juried competitions. Professor Prater was one of six visual artists selected by the city of Spartanburg to participate in the Cultural Exchange Program in Winterthur, Switzerland, where she exhibited her charcoal drawings and participated in a one-week residency. She has been a fellow at the artists' residencies Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Camnitzer Studio in Italy, and The Hambidge Center in Georgia.

Her new encaustic collection entitled "Hambidge Residency" opens Friday, November 4th. Every single piece is beautifully painted, buffed and polished - they all seem to light from within.

Wednesday comes before Thursday, which is shortly followed by Friday...
Yes, that's right! It's almost that time again. This Friday is the First Friday of the month! (It is permissible to sing and shout and dance.)

This Friday we will celebrate the beginning of November and the weekend of Open Studios with an invasion of colorful canines in the gallery. Make way for an assortment of the most diverse pack of dogs on the block. Go, Dog. Go!

This Friday from 6-9pm, A&L will be home to the opening of Kent Ambler's newest collection, so christened Running with Paint. Kent's collection features a huge selection of painted dogs. There are so many colors, shapes sizes, and breeds all captured with paint while making a mad dash for... well something that a dog would run for. And I suppose that's for you to decide! Just look for the clues in each dog's personality.

Not only am I blown away by the shear creativity and unique character found in each furry friend, but personally I am am maybe more surprised by the absolute volume of Kent's work. What a great selection! The gallery is overflowing with all the new residents. And then of course, I hear that Kent has created some new landscape paintings as well. This Friday will truly be an unveiling of an extensive project.

And don't forget, this weekend is so much more then just the normal First Friday of the month. This weekend is Open Studios in Greenville! This is your chance to meet artists, visit their galleries, and get a peek into their way of life.

In honor of the grand Open Studios tradition, A&L and the entire Flatiron building will be open for extended hours. Visit Friday 6-9pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, or Sunday 12-6pm. And if your going to be in the area, don't forget to check some of the other 30 or so artists in the Far West End (Pendleton Street Art's District). We all live in the same neighborhood, so what better way to get your exercise than to stroll around and meet my artist neighbors! Friday, here we come!

Start at the beginning. Buy the first piece and it’ll just flow naturally.

“But I don’t have the proper background in art.”

Anyone can collect art. Just pick the things that you are passionate about.

“I don’t know what good art is.”

Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “Good art” means something different to everyone.

“But I don’t collect art. Maybe later, when I grow up…”

Oh the age old excuses go around and around. Is there a valid reason not to begin collecting art now? Should we wait till we find more time, or have the proper training, or seem more grown up? Do we need to be qualified to begin?

I am of the opinion that that anyone can collect art beginning at anytime. And the younger the better. A great art collection is the visual story of one’s life. And life doesn’t begin as soon as we reach a certain age or social status.

Each piece in your art collection marks a special moment. What is it about that piece that speaks so directly to your heart? Why does it ring true, or feel familiar like an old friend? Each piece of art added to your collection is chosen specifically. Maybe it reminds you of a warm, half-forgotten memory. Maybe it challenges your thinking in a way that changes your life. Maybe it is simply the makes you smile. It just happens to be beautiful. It perfectly fits the color scheme of your bedroom.

An art collection is not a status symbol, not a sign of maturity or balance. Collecting art is a natural extension of the creative soul. It may be that collecting art is the first step in discovering your creative side. Everyone has one, yet somewhere between the freedom of finger painting in kindergarten and the stress of school and a career, some of us lose touch with that creative spirit. Collecting art is the first step to winning it back!

Starting a collection is going back to the beginning. It began when we freely expressed emotions with crayons, asked our mothers to add our masterpieces to the fridge gallery, and drew glasses on the serious adult figures in our father’s newspaper. Many of us have been collecting since childhood. We forget that collecting art is as simple as trading baseball cards, doodling in our notebooks, and asking a B.F.F to “please tattoo my arm at recess!”. These are all forms of art collecting that are familiar in childhood. But as we get older we complicate the idea and feel that we must be mature in how we collect. Suddenly we are too scared to try.

As adults, we sometimes loose the key to a good collection. We understood it as children when we simply collected everything we like. Collecting art is about finding the pieces that we are passionate about. Whether it comes to fine art, fine crafts, a collection of wooden spoons or all of the above, you can’t go wrong if you’re stay true to your taste.

As you collect, you will grow in confidence. You will recapture that childhood nerve that boldly states, “I love this. Maybe it doesn’t make sense to everyone else, but I understand it. This is my favorite picture!”. There shouldn’t be pressure to make your art collection a certain way to fit some abstract standard. It just happens naturally. The hardest part is beginning it. Take the first step! Try something new!

As you begin, be open to a wide variety of things. You may discover a very professional piece, then add a child’s creation, next a long forgotten gem forever out of date. Maybe you know the artist personally. Maybe it’s a piece of your own. There is no set path. Each collection is different!

Anyone can collect art beginning at anytime. Just take the first step!

What's New Buga-Boo?

Happy Thursday!

The weather is amazing, fall is in the air, and tomorrow is the First Friday of the month! What's not to celebrate?

Now, for those of you wondering about what's new in the gallery this week, well here's the scoop: there's all new Annie Koelle for starters! She created four new mini paintings of bon fires. They are so calm and relaxing! I can't help but recall warm memories of autumn fires. I can smell the smoke mixing with the crisp, chilly air. Ah, fall is coming!

I decided to take the little paintings one step further by attaching all four to a lovely old plank found in the garage of the Aiken Street house I've been working on. And Viola!

Also, I am extremely pleased to welcome Noni back into the gallery this week! It's been so long and and not a minute too soon. As you enter the front door, one of the first things that welcomes you are the all new Fashion Studies she's created. They're small, colorful little pieces made with a dreamy water color pencil. Each one has so much personality and they the perfect pieces for a gallery wall in your bedroom or dressing area!

Remember to drop by tomorrow night between 6 and 9 for First Friday celebration! There'll be the amazing opening of Jo Carol Mitchell-Roger's photography show, Afterimage. Everything is hung and ready to go. The large scale prints are so inspiring and refreshing. You need to see them!

Hello Friends!

And now, coming this Friday-- the new show for the month of October will be--
Afterimage! Beginning with this first Friday of the month, A&L will be home to the photography of Jo Carol Mitchell-Rogers. Afterimage is a collection of her work which centers all around the philosophy of spontaneity and decisiveness.

Jo Carol spends her time split between teacher and studio artist. She is a Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Anderson University as well as a member of the Artbomb Studios right down the street. And she excelled in both walks of life earning recognition on campus and in the state for her teaching as well as having her art included in over 70 invitational solo and group exhibitions, over 30 juried shows, and is included in numerous private collections throughout the country. Nothing is half hearted!

Jo Carol is a master of both painting and photography, but when it comes to her photography, it's all about immediate gratification. While painting is a form of meditation and slow creative growth, she uses her photography to balance things out. She embraces a quick, decisive spirit by refusing to crop or manipulate her photography. The philosophy behind her work is all about catching that one “decisive moment” before it is lost forever. “The challenge (and joy)” she explains, “is to find it, or rather have it find me – to recognize and extract that instant with sensitivity and precision.”

This month, Jo Carol will teach us what Cartier-Bresson meant when he remarked that capturing the ‘decisive moment’ means “putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis”. For Jo Carol, life is a continuous stream of images to frame in her mind’s eye or with a camera. Afterimage is a chance to see life in the same way.

It's not just the name of my gallery. It's two of the most important influences when it comes to my design philosophy. I've never found this truer than with the face lift project I've embarked on with the 16 Aiken Street house in the Pendleton Street Art's District. Having renovated and decorated 3 houses over the last 20 years, I've learned something new with each project.

Imagine this...a house that was totally closed up - not a window, blind or door opened in two years. I am watching this house go from a dark and destitute abode, to a construction site and eventually to a light filled beautiful and livable home and studio space.

I am partnering with such awesome individuals in this project and just today as the back door opened and a new/old window from the original bathroom was inserted in the back hallway, the bright light revealed even more potential than I dreamed.

It's one thing to add lamps but it's another to let the light in. Letting the light in revealed the art of the home... great bones, rippling and colorful bead board and a long lingering hallway.

Happy weekend friends!

Just two blocks from the gallery, something beautiful is emerging. A charming, 1920s bungalow is receiving a well deserved face-lift. I foresee this cozy house being the perfect combined living and studio space for an up and coming artist in the area. Renovation is going to be very involved, but I can't wait to get started on this little gem!

When it comes to polishing up this 90 year-old abode, the key is staying true to its character. After all, that aged, historic feel is what creates so much of the magic in the Pendleton Street Arts District. My goal is to preserve the charm of peeling paint and imperfection. There's a balance between old and new, clean and textured. And the contrast catches my interest! Here are all the before pictures. Keep an eye open for the afters!

We should begin renovations soon, and the house will be ready for move-in by November. The layout of this house is perfect for an artist looking for multi living, studio, storage, and gallery space! As you walk into the lovely central hall, the eleven foot ceilings and open "four-square" floor plan make it an obvious choice for entertainment and gallery space. There's a living room, sitting room, large kitchen, two bedrooms, one and a half baths, and lots of studio space! Also, there's an upstairs office which is perfect for a dark room or walk-in closet. And the outside has a nice green yard which is all fenced in. This is an artist's dream home!

Indie Craft Parade This Weekend!

Hmmm... Guess what I'm thinking of? This video from last year is a hint...

I know its only Wednesday, but I'm so ready for the weekend. Not that this week as been particularly hard. (I even had Monday off from school.) No, its not exhaustion or anything of the sort. I can't wait for this weekend because its the second annual Indie Craft Parade!

All this weekend, artists from around the Southeast will be camping out in the Hugeunot Mill Loft downtown for a juried art festival. There'll be crafts, food, and music! Each artist will have a small booth overflowing with quality handmade goods. The Indie Craft Parade is what would happen if Etsy sellers had physical little shops that anyone could visit. Yes please!

The concept for this local indoor art market was created by two friends, Erin Godbey and Elizabeth Ramos. These Greenville girls headed up the plan to unite independent artists for a weekend of quality design and creativety! There are six categories for the festival: 2D Fine Art, 3D Fine Art, To Wear, Fiber Art, Paper Goods, and Everything Else.

I am so excited to see what artists will be showing off their work this year. And I always love being in the gorgeous Huguenot Loft above the Peace Center! I know for sure that some of our very own A&L resident artists will be coming with their latest creations, namely Mollie Greene, Katie Coston, Wingo (Jimmie Lynn @#!*% ) and Rachael Madeline. You know where to find me this weekend!!

Friday night, 6-9pm, is the VIP opening evening during which a $25 ticket gives you primo access to shop and meet the artists before the doors open to the general public. Saturday is free admission from 9am-7pm, and Sunday, 11am-5pm. Come check out what's happening at the Indie Craft Parade this weekend!

Our official fall kick-off and September First Friday art confab was one of those lively and spirited kind of events that's left both Toni and the A & L crew jumping out of the stands - beaming with pride and team spirit! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you friends and collectors who came out on Friday night and Saturday to view and purchase the all new collection, " A Tribute to Carolina Cotton" - Toni Massell's FIRST exhibit and certainly not her last! The show runs through the end of September - it's just the beginning for Toni as her fast-selling new works featuring the Carolina cotton fields continue to delight us all!

Happy Thursday friends!

(A.K.A "The-Day-Before-First-Friday"!)

Just in: these gorgeously fun, abstract paintings have hit the A&L gallery! It looks like a party crash landed here with these bright confetti works scattered around. There are so many shapes and colors to enjoy!

Inspired by cut up pieces of paint pallets, Annie Koelle is at it again creating something quite dynamic and different from her usual organic pieces. The change in the feeling of her work is probably owing to the creative process employed, mostly involving late nights and poetry. Evidence of this can be found in the phrase accompanying each piece. Every title is a line from the Pablo Nerudo poem, "One Day Stands Out".

Annie explained a bit about the significance of the poem: "The very first line sets the theme for the poem "From resonance come numbers" and the rest of the poem proceeds to give you a mash of phrases that are wonderful to say aloud, even the visuals they create in your mind are beautiful. I kind of felt this way about these little paintings, that the combinations of colors had a visual resonance even when they didn't give you an object in context."

Memory Lane

As you may already know, this Friday happens to be the first in September. And every true A&L follower knows the meaning of this-- there will be a new collection opening in the gallery!

After the sneak preview of both artists, I couldn't help but make my way down memory lane. I must be so nostalgic.

First stop, Toni G. Massell's folk paintings! Her images of cotton fields took me right back to a road trip with my family to Florida. We began passing fields on our way down and my parents, being the ever constant teachers, pulled over for a short history lesson. It was my first time seeing a cotton field in person. It was huge, sunny, prickly, and hot! I remember fingering the strange, white puffs of fiber growing from the twiggy plants. Toni said her paintings were inspired by the beautiful simplicity of the fields discovered while she was driving. I understand the feeling first hand.

Next stop, Teri Pena's encaustic paintings! The technique of encaustic painting has been around for ages. If you really want to go all the way back, you'll discover this kind of painting was actually very popular in ancient Romano-Egypt.(And this matters to me because I couldn't get enough of ancient Egypt as a child. I loved the history!)

I find it fascinating to compare the oldest examples of encaustic painting with the gorgeous results Teri has achieved in her new collection. As you can see here, encaustic painting is well known for its use in creating portraits in Roman-Egyptian art.

Yesterday I gave you a sneak peek into Toni Guarino Massell's newest collection opening September 2nd. Well, here's another peek into what's going on during the next First Friday.

Terri Pena will also be opening her collection September 2nd! Her pieces are so full of life and movement. What a pleasure to simply let them absorb you!

Drawing her inspiration straight from the medium itself, Terri's collection explores the possibilities of encoustic painting. It's a process of heating wax, adding pigments, and applying it to a surface. It's a living, moving medium; a kind of sculptural painting process. Terri layers, scrapes, and layers again to create her explosions of chromatic bliss. This is your chance to explore her most colorful creations yet!

Also, don't forget to stop into the gallery for the last few days of Flint(squared). The collection will run until the end of August, then make way for Toni and Terri!

Tucked away in a small mounted shelf to the right as you enter the gallery is a collection of collages and original drawings by Rachael Madeline. Each brightly colored piece is individually wrapped. I can't help but think of candy as I sort through each delectable delight. They're so playful! Rachael refers to them as Sweet Tweets, a series of small (5"x7") creations full of whimsical birds, balloons, and type written messages.

She uses colored pencils, pearlescent watercolor, and shimmering ink to add glimmer to the background. After creating a background pattern, Rachael uses graphite to bring to life her childish characters. The collage pieces are layered with lace, vintage threads, and pretty papers. Each scene is inspired by dreams and memories, meant to bring a smile to your face.

Rachael's Sweet Tweets really are the equivalent of candy-- conveniently wrapped, well priced, and "fun sized". Each drawing is 40$, while each collage is just 25$. Sweet Tweets are an adorably easy way to collect original art!

And don't forget to visit Rachael's booth, Loose Tooth Studio, at the Indie Craft Parade, September 9-11. This is her first year participating and she's been working extra hard to create new pieces in time for the market. I can't wait to see what she's been cooking up!

I was working in the gallery with Teresa the other day when a lovely surprise arrived-- all new ceramic work delivered by Katie Coston! She had a wooden Coke crate full of goodies from Illyria Pottery. There were, of course, her fun mini mug necklaces, and as well as several larger pieces.

I remember the first time I heard of Katie Coston. I had commented on my friend’s unusual necklace. It was a long, metal chain with a miniature mug strung through by its tiny handle. The glaze was a pretty blue, kind of earthy and calming. It blended seamlessly with my friend’s hip style. Where’d it come from?

“It’s Katie Coston!” she sang.

So you can imagine my excitement to discover the curly haired artist walking in the front door to make her delivery in person! Katie’s work is fresh and natural. Each piece is inspired by organic textures and reminds us that clay does actually come from the earth. Illyria Pottery takes ceramic art back to its roots while bringing usable sculptures to the table.

Hello Friends and Collectors!

Imagine the possibilities when two very different elements are combined—the raw, creative atmosphere of the Pendleton Street Arts district with the polished, upscale glamour of designer fashion. This weekend we’re going to try something completely new in Flatiron Studios!

One of my good friends will be collaborating with me to hold a Designer at a Discount clothing show. Her name is Kristin Robinson and she is the savvy lady in charge of collecting designer labels from fashionable boutiques for the show. She has all sorts of treasures from sample sales and overstock that will be available for 50-60% off the original price.

I first met Kristin when we were both working for ScanSource in the marketing department. We were working on very different kinds of events back then, but after talking it over for the past six months, we are thrilled to be collaborating again. This type of thing is right up our alley!

It’s an unlikely pairing, but the rough walls and creative energy in Flatiron Studios is the perfect atmosphere for Kristin’s fashionable finds. We even have a curtained area already built in as a dressing room!

The Designer at a Discount inaugural show will be held this coming Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday, 10am-5pm. It’s a great way to look like a million bucks without having to spend it! Child’s Play

Greetings friends and collectors!

Today the cow jumped over the moon. Well, in the gallery anyway-- over and over again.

Walking in the front door, I find myself enveloped by a drifting cloud of nursery rhyme mobiles. A school of little fish swim past my head. They stop before reaching a boy wearing his crown. The young gentleman dances up and down in my window. (I think he may be the famous Jack of “Jack and Jill”. I suppose the crown signifies that he has not yet fallen down and broken it.) Just beyond there is a dainty paper cutout that resembles a boat making its lazy circular patterns through a storm of bright confetti.

Imagine that a series of tornadoes worked their way through the land of Nod picking up various odds and ends of nursery rhymes. In some cases you may see clues hinting at each characters' original story such as key words floating above their heads. But in others you may need to look more closely and study the mobile as it spins and dances mid air. It’s well worth your time!

Mollie Greene brought these whimsical mobiles earlier this week and they’ve been bobbing in the gallery air space ever since.There are several of these delicate wire, string and paper creations. Closer examination reveals interesting details about the paper. I quickly noticed the use of old record sleeves and other vintage papers. What a great idea! Mollie has perfected the art of child’s play.

My New Neighbors

Wednesday greetings! Annie Koelle has a new series of landscape paintings that are so fresh and fun here in the gallery. Venturing out of her vintage flea market feel, she’s created a few surprises by moving in a more contemporary direction. I think everyone will be pleased to explore these fresh creations from Annie.

Also, speaking of new additions to the gallery, I am extremely delighted to welcome our very own art couple, Signe and Genna Grushovenko, to Flatiron Studios! As hard as it is to say good-bye to our Clay people friends, it’s exciting to make new friends as well. Signe and Genna have been collaborating through art for nearly ten years now.

Genna creates richly textured patterns which Signe uses as a backdrop for her bold, blocky ‘panes’ of oil color. The result is a powerful, graphic image depicting scenes from ordinary life as it was decades ago but delivered with a modern twist. It’s absolutely absorbing. I am thrilled to have the Grushovenko’s as my new neighbors.

Poke your head in this Friday to say hello. The entire Flatiron building will be open between 6-9pm for First Friday!

New Kid On The Block

Hullo, this is Annie Churdar!

I’m the new voice you’ll hear occasionally on the blog. Or that one kid in the gallery you don’t quite recognize. I’m here to help Teresa whenever I can and learn as much as she’s willing to teach. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to be working with her! I admire her keen eye for design and head for business. She always seems so put together! I hope some of her fairy dust rubs off on me.

If I’m not helping Teresa, you can catch me around town blowing bubbles, making art with friends, or going on adventures to explore the unknown. I might even serve you dinner or cater your party with my team mates at Table 301. But once September comes, your best bet may be to find me in a Furman practice room. I’ll be studying piano and graphic design there this fall. And I’m easy enough to spot. I’ll be the small girl with half her hair missing. Yes, I do love contrast that much. So keep a sharp eye out and be sure to say hello!

Just Five More Days!

This Friday, August 5^th A & L will re-open for business! Do pop in and see what’s changed over the past month. We’re kicking off the Flint(squared) show and a new season as the gallery resumes its normal business hours every Friday and Saturday from 10am-5pm, and every First Friday from 6-9pm.

Now, for those of you who’ve not heard of Flint(squared), let me first say this—be prepared for a phenomenon that hasn’t taken place in 17 years! Flint(squared) is the reunion of two talented twin artists, Greg and Paul Flint. It is the shoulder to shoulder presentation of two different personalities and approaches to art.

Paul takes what most would consider the more traditional approach to his art. Well known for his paintings of sheep, Paul uses their simple form to focus on basic elements. Working with their familiar, rounded shape provides the perfect opportunity to experience the reaction between his materials. Each painting is a celebration of the process and most basic elements of art—the texture, color, composition, and shape. There’s a strong personality and shadowy atmosphere unique to each piece.

Greg, on the other hand, uses a complicated process to juxtapose antique elements and the newest technology. His process begins with a Holga camera photo featuring relics from the past and the occasional modern element or hand drawn detail. After being combined with digital images and manipulated via Photoshop, the photo is ready to be printed and applied to another surface using a polymer transfer. The result is an interesting texture and moody, antique feel. Greg’s work preserves the past while embracing the latest technology.

Don’t miss your chance to experience the opening of Flint(squared) in person this Friday from 6-9pm. It’s going to be double trouble! And while you’re at it, remember to wish us a happy birthday! This Friday is also our fourth year anniversary night. And there’s plenty to celebrate. During those four years A & L has had the privilege of holding over 50 openings and hosting more than 75 different artists. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Together Again!

Early Saturday morning greetings everyone! It's been a while since I've blogged about my dear friend Ryan Calloway, Creative Ironworks and Artistry Studios. It's not that Ryan and I haven't been talking, working and palling around, it's just the first time we've collaborated on a project together lately.

Ryan is currently crafting metal counter tops for a customer's kitchen - I got a sneak peek on Wednesday and honestly they blew me away! The photos here show the counter tops in the configuration of the kitchen, however the finish is still in the beginning stages.

The project also includes a round table for the eating area which will have a custom metal top paired with a vintage aluminum base, a metal curtain rod for the same eating area is also in the works. Every single time I walk in to Ryan's studio (even after the first time 4 years ago in his country studio), I still tremble with excitement. The beauty of the raw material and the welding and melding of materials when transformed by the fire is so incredibly mind-blowing. I am in constant awe of Ryan's skill and artistry in producing some of the areas finest iron products!! Once this project is installed photos will come!

Block Party

Good Morning friends and collectors! As I was pulling together last minute details for a client this weekend my mind drifted towards completion of the project - the fun part! Not that I don't enjoy the logistical and mundane pieces of the puzzle, let's face it the "art part" is where my party begins. As I loaded the car with drapery, hardware and pulled out of the driveway I anticipated the drive up Kent Ambler's winding road. I was completely thrilled to be making my way in to his creative oasis of paintings and woodcuts...I didn't even consider the surprise that lay before me.

My customer has been longing to add art to her home for some time now and I've urged her to take her time and let the story of her collection unfold -- after all, the story should be an understanding of the family's world.

So, back to Kent's studio. KA has been in "painting mode" lately and creating paintings that remind me of the work that I fell in love with four years ago at JL's house. The paintings are unbelievably large and gorgeous in shades of rich blues, golds and creams he is known for. (You will see some of these new pieces in the gallery and on this blog one day very soon.) But back to the business of my customer...

I knew I would find a painting that L would flip over, but what I didn't anticipate was the unfolding of her art story. As my eyes wandered around the studio time stood still when I focused in on a 5 ft. stack of Kent's wood blocks. The blocks, the colors, the textures...I did politely ask permission to look thru the blocks and Kent obliged. As I placed the blocks on the floor the curatorial thread of narrative for my customer's home was complete.

I loaded 3 stacks of wood blocks and was off. The photos I am sharing today are random shots of the "block party" I enjoyed in my driveway back at home...photos of the 9 block collection installed are coming soon!

Morning collectors! All of this introducing/welcoming connection-making and collaborating is the kind of thing that makes my job the funnest job ever...easy to say when I'm the one with the job of admiring and shooting the pictures - sweat free. So, today I am revealing to you a stunning Diane Kilgore Condon installation that has me soaring with pride. My friend and fellow colleague/designer, Marc Shrekengosh attended Diane's show at the Wyche Mansion back in March - the wheels started turning! Marc introduced Diane's work to a client of his and she fell hard. The gears began to turn and this week we installed a five piece literary piece in J's dining room.

Diane was also commissioned to do a mural on canvas for J's guest bathroom - an undertaking that has had Ms. Condon fairly busy lately. Peak in to J's world - the outcome, amazing!

Tuesday greetings friends! I'm writing to you with my designer hat perched on my head today to offer a little "white" advice. It occurred to me while at the lake that my white obsession has been going on for about 30 years now. The White Room, the bridal store I owned for 9 years was an overflowing palette of white, my favorite album of all times is the Beatles' 9th album, The White Album and and just about 6 weeks ago my son married the most precious girl in the world who flowed down the aisle in layers of supple white.

So what in the world has that got to do with today's post? Actually since "white" has been the "it" color for some time now, I have had many many people ask me for advice on white paint colors...I have asked at least a dozen friends and designers what whites they consistently use. White is hard to do without coming off sterile - the first time I used white in a customers dining room his best friend walked in and screamed OMG it's white...so happy to report that I have stumbled upon the softest, most beautiful white....Behr Ultra's Bleached Linen. My porch is now Bleached Linen and the gallery is too. A couple of other white's that certainly deserve a mention are Ben Moore's China White (with a touch of gray) and Ben Moore's French Canvas (my living room color with hints of blue and green). And last but not least, when you begin the search for the perfect white, be sure to buy a sample and place it in every corner of the room -- lighting comes in to play as most of you already know and can completely change the outcome. Greetings everyone from Lake Junaluska, NC. Just checking in and sharing some of the beauty of the area...I strolled around the lake today with camera in hand and took photos of some of my favorite houses. Also skipped on over to my favorite nursery, Grass Root, in Waynesville NC. This gorgeous 60 degree day will be one to remember for a very long time. And, I heard from a little bird that Greenville had the same delightful weather day - I know you are happy about that! Hope you enjoy! I will be back to the business of the gallery next week. Hi friends and collectors! As you know, I love introducing people to art and collecting and supporting artists and today I am thrilled to introduce you to an artist I stumbled upon about a month ago. After searching the 3 state region for a perfect 12' farm table for a customer, I finally called a designer friend for advice. She was quick to tell me about Mobili Farm Tables...not only were her words glowing about these folks, but unbelievably they were in good ole Greenville, S.C. You can imagine my delight. I jumped in the car and met with Jaryd in his gorgeous light-filled mill space and of course the rest is history.

Mobili takes an artistic approach to every step of the process. First J carefully listened to my customer so he could create the table that best fit her families' needs and lifestyle. Then he hand selected 200 year old heart pine from Camp Sevier -- wood filled with the character, soul and color that was so perfect for it's new owner. With years of working in Hollywood on feature films and television, J painstakingly creates every single table to appear as natural as the original antique furniture. And wouldn't you say he and his team created a masterpiece? The finished dining area will be photographed in a couple of weeks and I will share again.

Greetings friends and collectors! By now summer is in full swing, and we hope you are enjoying relaxing time with friends and family, whether at home or on vacation.

Just wanted to let you know that, like previous summers, Art & Light Gallery will be closed for the month of July. Teresa will be spending the month searching out fabulous new furniture finds and refreshing and refurbishing the gallery.

The gallery will reopen in August for First Friday on the 5th. We are excited to be presenting the show “Flint (squared)”, featuring work by brothers Paul and Greg Flint.

As always, if you need anything during the month of July, feel free to call and make an appointment with Teresa. She is more than happy to try and accommodate your art and design needs this summer!

And while the Pendleton Street gallery will be closed, Teresa’s booth at Antiques on Augusta is accessible all summer long. Antiques on Augusta is open every day: Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. There Teresa is currently displaying Joe Carol Rogers’ oil paintings, as well as all new furniture finds.

But your art fun doesn't have to end with the weekend! Greenville's Indie Craft Parade is co-sponsoring a showing of "Handmade Nation" at the Wharehouse Theatre downtown Tuesday night, May 31st. ICP's Erin Godbey says that this documentary celebrates the new wave of art, craft and design that is capturing our nation's attention. This work is the feature film debut of author, artist and curator Faythe Levine, who traveled to 15 cities and covered more than 19,000 miles to interview artists, crafters, makers, curators and community members. She gives the public an exclusive and rarely seen look into the lives of these creative individuals.

Hi friends and collectors! This weekend, not only is there a great opening at A&L for Signe and Genna Grushovenko, there are a lot of other fun things going on in the arts district.

The Artistry on Andrews Street is hosting an interior design show, showcasing designers who focus on tapping into the talent of local artisans.Teresa set up an exhibit of furniture and art featuring a dramatic Matt Kargol painting, along with two end tables he custom built for the show. The space also displays pair of Paige Caraway lamps and two worn vintage Nelson pendants, as well as wall sculptures by Ryan Calloway.

The White Whale on Smythe Street is also opening a show this weekend entitled "Visual Reverberations", which they describe as "an experiment of visual conversations". This concept comes from the fact that artists "listen" with their eyes, and "speak" through their art.

So this weekend, plan a tour of the arts district and take in all these wonderful sights! You never know what may inspire you.

Happy First Friday week friends and collectors! Hope you are enjoying this spring weather and looking for a reason to come out to the gallery on Friday night, because we have something very special this month. The talented couple Signe & Genna Grushovenko has just moved to Greenville, and we have the privilege of hosting their debut show in their new hometown. Friday night will be a wonderful time to show them some true Southern hospitality as we welcome them to the upstate!

Just as I have you will love meeting this creative duo and seeing the lively art they create together. They have been collaborating for nearly ten years, and their teamwork produces beautiful work that is richly layered and vibrant.

Genna starts the process by prepping the support (wood, canvas, masonite), which he paints in colorful patterns. Signe then adds bold, almost abstracted portraits, drawn from her collection of vintage photographs, both from her family and from various flea markets and yard sales.

Art & Light anticipates that this couple will bring much to the upstate through their personalities and art, and we are thrilled to be hosting them this month. We would encourage you to come see their unique work at the show opening on Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m., so you can personally welcome Signe and Genna to Greenville. The gallery will also be open Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We are so excited to be partnering with Kathy Harris of Coldwell Banker Caine to present Diane Kilgore’s show “Black Water Sweet Light” at the Wyche Mansion on March 26th and 27th. This exhibition is part of our house party series that bring artists’ work into home settings for unique and special events. Diane has created stunning new large works especially for the dramatic architectural spaces in the Wyche Mansion. This work reflects her recent journey as an artist and her desire to, as she says, make this show "an experience, like it would be if you were to stumble across the things that I'm trying to paint, like a surprise." You won't want to miss this special event that celebrates both a piece of Greenville's heritage and the work of a prominent local artist. Octo-Print: Kent Ambler and Luis Jaramillo

We just can't wait for the opening of Kent Ambler's "Octo-Print" exhibit tonight at Art & Light! You will love seeing the diverse arrangement of prints and meeting the seven other artists Kent has brought together for this show.

Just wanted to share a little more about Kent, as well as Luis Jaramillo, another of the artists. Kent Ambler always liked to draw, but it wasn't until college that he discovered printmaking. Now Kent makes art (full-time!) from his home in Paris Mountain. Like writers who "write about what they know," Kent draws inspiration from the elements that surround him as he works: dogs, birds, local scenes, as well as the work of "genuine folk artists" that he has met in his travels.

Luis Jaramillo owns Atelier Fine Frames, LLC and also founded ARS LUNA PRESS printmaking studio, which is based out of his home. Luis finds inspiration for his bold monotypes and collages from his experience in the natural world. He works with water-based inks on delicate Japanese papers, as well as heavier weight American printing papers.

Octo-Print: John Hilton and JP Tousignant

Today, you get to meet two more of the great printmakers featured in Kent Ambler's "Octo-Print" show, opening this Friday!

John Hilton, who attended Clemson at the same time as Kent, is both a teacher and an artist. He writes, "memory, narrative, identity, and personal history are at the core of my work." His subject matter includes an interest in folklore and symbolism which can be seen in his interesting animal "hybrids". John says he enjoys getting caught up in exploring his subject matter through the "doing" of art and you will enjoy experiencing his narrative pieces.

Next, we have J.P. Tousignant, who describes the opportunity to explore lithography for Octo-Print as "an opportunity to return to the printed image and see an old friend, Johny Litho." The etching press on which he worked for this exhibit was actually a gift to him from Kent Ambler, and J.P. has enjoyed using it to combine various images in his collage-like prints. In these works, J.P. uses elements such as found objects, stencils, clip art and silhouetted life stills to create interesting juxtapositions of textures and images.

Octo-Print: Bess Whittington & Steven Chapp

As we look forward to this week's First Friday opening, we want to introduce you to some of the amazing printmakers that Kent Ambler has put together for his Octo-Print show.

First, we have Bess Whittington, a talented fiber artist and printmaker. Bess says that she especially enjoys "the collograph process...because it involves layering textures." She combines elements of cardboard, fabric, paper and hot glue, creates a plate to print, and then adds hand-coloring after the print. Her love of layers is also seen when she uses several plates to form one work of art that is rich and dimensional.

Steven Chapp is currently both a visual arts teacher and a printmaker. Of his art, Steven says his objective is "to create images that not only speak of marks but to have marks that speak for the image." His colors and images serve as metaphors, often to communicate narrative ideas, something that is born out of his childhood interest in book illustrations.

Hi friends and collectors...Did you enjoy the video we posted featuring Kent Ambler and Annie Koelle? We hope to continue exposing you to the world behind the unique art you see here in the gallery.

Last First Friday, Annie Koelle introduced her darling mini-landscapes. They sold so quickly we had to ask her to make more right away! She has brought in a whole new set of them for this week's opening, and we wanted to give you a glimpse of her process of creating these little gems.

Annie says that her inspiration for these comes from old European minature landscapes that she says "take [her] to wonderful places." With these, she explores a looser style than seen in her intricate insect drawings.

No less a part of the process is the work that Annie does in transforming her frames from thriftstore finds to faux-aged pieces that, as she says, "seem to have come straight from a Prisian flea market." This process includes sanding, priming, scratching, painting, painting again, and more scraping to reveal the original paint color.

The finished effect is delightful, and they are also delightfully priced, so you may end up starting your own mini-collection!

First Friday is tomorrow and you will love Rachael Madeline and S. M. Bower's show "Wonders and Blunders." Today we'll tell you a little more about S. M. Bower's fascinating photography process.

S. M. Bower has crafted a process that comes completely from his own handiwork. Instead of relying on digital manipulation to add interest and character to his photographs, S. M. Bower has mastered more archaic techniques and applies those techniques in fresh, modern ways. One of the cameras he uses is a homemade pinhole camera that eliminates just about every element of modern photography except for the raw light. The whimsical subjects of these photographs, chairs, ladders, bird houses, are actually tiny replicas that he has constructed to decieve the eye.

The other camera he uses is a 1950's Kodak Duaflex II twin lens reflex camera. The age and imperfections of this tool add a dreamy effect to compositions of playful balloons. Both cameras and processes result in work that is both surreal and full of wonder.

Happy February, friends and collectors! Today I want you to meet Rachael Madeline and her wonderful drawings! Her show opens this Friday at Art & Light, along with her boyfriend, S. M. Bower and his photographs. More on him and his work tomorrow.

Rachael's exhibit presents a fantastical journey into the land of memories and dreams, her colorful stylized drawings bringing to mind moments both happy and sad. Rachael creates narratives within her pictures and describes them as "trying to find their way back home."

Her inspiration for the wistful birds featured in her works first came during her stay as the resident artist in Northern Italy at La Macina di San Cresci. These birds become the characters in her drawings, symbolic of our own journeys and memories.

Rachael also has an array of smaller collage work that channels the same whimsy and charm of her larger drawings.
