15 Reasons to Visit us This Weekend...

Pat Kilburg

I have had this pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming feeling all week while hanging the second annual "February Heat" exhibit. This show will knock your socks off. 14 local artists trying their hand at encaustic work - the show includes an all star cast including Annie Koelle, David Slone, Pat Kilburg, Kyle Buttram, Blake Ross, Paul Flint, Greg Flint, Kent Ambler, Alexia Timberlake, Diane Kilgore Condon, Teresa Prator, Tim Speaker, Teri Pena, and Joseph Bradley..PLUS Susan Young's "Broken Requiem" installation - that adds up to 15 and if you need more reasons to join us on First Friday night (6-9) or Thurs, Fri, or Saturday during the day, here's another one. The Clay People will be open and you will scream with delight when you see Angelique and Rhonda's figurative clay sculptures. We can't have a show without you -- you make the "we." We will have a blast - see you at the gallery!

10 Minutes with Susan...

Susan Young's "Broken Requiem" installation is coming to life in a & l's solo gallery this week so here's a quick 10 mins. from Susan -- wouldn't you like to know what makes her tick...

Susan, where do you get your inspiration? I draw inspiration from all around me, but especially in the everyday (a doorknob, a light bulb, a wine cork, the texture and color of various fabric, the overlooked object of our lives.") I surround myself with other artists which feeds my work as well.

What's your house like? I'm still in the young growing stages of forming a "home." I invested in a great, big, comfy red sofa in college that I truly adore. Like art, I look for pieces that are well designed, unique, and beautiful in their own rite (and still cheap enough that I can afford them). I have an obsession with lights - I especially love paper lanterns. My one bedroom apartment is filled with art from a vast array of artists. Even tho I am running out of wall space, I've found that you make space for the pieces you really love. I also fill my cabinets with art. I openly trade art.
What would you have been if you had not been an artist? I really don't know - the only other subject that really held my interest was science. Art is such a part of me that I can't fathom being anything else.

What kind of music do you like? Almost all - I have a serious love affair with music. I am loving NPR more every day for providing me an outlet to discover new and interesting artists. Some of my all time favorites include Cowboy Mouth, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Lisa Loeb, The Flaming Lips, Tegan and Sara, Flogging Molly, the list goes on.

What you you reading right now? I am reading my Bible more than anything lately and I'm trying to get thru a large stack of art magazines.

What are you working on after "Broken Requiem?" Artbomb's Spring Show is May 15...I will dive into making new work for that once I finish this piece. Cups. More cups. Look for more utilitarian pieces our of my studio.

Heating it Up in the District!

Icy cold greetings my friends! There's nothing like a layer of snow and ice to make me yearn for sun, sand and heat, BUT, since a warm weather trip is not on the agenda this week let me jump in tell you what is. First, art & light's second annual group exhibit, "February Heat" opens next Friday, February 5th (6-9pm) and will run thru February 13.

New encaustic work by Pat Kilburg

Second, whether you're an artist, an emerging or established collector or a friend of all things artful, you will not want to miss this show. 15+ local artists have spent the last couple of months experimenting with paint and hot wax. Lead by Paul Flint, the show promises to heat things up a bit with a mystic combination of painting pros and first time users of wax..

Diane Kilgore Condon has been working with hot wax for more than a year now.

For those of you who aren't quite sure what encaustic means, it is an ancient technique where artists heat beeswax to the liquid stage, then mix in pigmentation. After the artist gets everything "just so," heat is applied to the whole business, which results in a fusion of colored wax and wood. Metal tools and special brushes help shape or texture the substance.

Paul Flint's encaustic work

Now, wait til you hear about the incredible cast of artists involved in this exhibit - they include none other than Annie Koelle, Pat Kilburg, Blake Ross, Kent Ambler, Paul Flint, Greg Flint, Diane Kilgore Condon, Alexia Timberlake, Leslie Hart, Teresa Prator, Tim Speaker, Joseph Bradley, Teri Pena, and David Slone.

I know it's still a week away, but do plan to stop by - if you're from my neck of the woods, it might just be your only chance to warm up in February.
PS If you can't make opening night, remember, a & l is open every Thurs. - Sat. (10-5)

New Light!

Last 3 days!

Blake Ross

Gosh it's hard to believe that January is almost over...sad, but true, only 3 more days of "Crossing Borders" and Blake Ross's one man show. The work is stunning and ranges from $20 - $700. I'll be throwing the doors open in the morning at 10 and will be open through Saturday.

Blake Ross

Come see us in the Pendleton Street Arts District where Village Studios will be open from 1 - 5 Thurs - Sat. and where my friends at Coffee to a Tea serve the best coffee, homemade pimento cheese and sun-dried tomato bread sandwiches and the best sweets for the sweets in town!

Then...a brand new show coming Friday, February 5th - more news and photos coming your way on "February Heat", Susan Young's "Broken Requiem" and "A Tribute to Folk." I've had a sneak peek of all this work and I gotta tell you, you are going to love it!
